Oskaloosa--The Penn men's soccer team scored first in a Midwest Classic Conference matchup with The Franciscan, but could not sustain the lead, falling 2-1, Monday.
Penn (4-9, 2-3) outshot the Saints, 20-13, and appeared to be in control for much of the game. Nate Turnbull (Jr., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) scored Penn's lone goal at the 36:17 mark, giving the Statesmen a 1-0 lead that would stand until the 73rd minute when Casey Vieira scored the first of his two goals. Vieira gave the Saints the lead at 82:45 and Penn could not match the goal, falling to The Franciscan for just the second time in six meetings in men's soccer.
Steve Quintero (Sr., Corona, Calif., Riverside CC) and Adam Wynn (Jr., Grapevine, Tex., Colleyville Heritage HS) both had strong offensive days, with six shots and four shots, respectively.
Tugberk Tekdemir (Fr., Ankara, Turkey, Mustafa Kemal HS) collected five saves in the loss.
The Statesmen, coached by Ken DeCook, are off until this weekend when they travel to LaCrosse, Wis., for a MCC meeting with Viterbo, Saturday, at 1 p.m.
