Bourbonnais, Ill.--Both Penn cross country teams competed well in their final competition before the Midwest Classic Conference/NAIA Region VII meet, Saturday.
The Statesmen finished second with 91 points at the Olivet Nazarene Invitational as Wheaton (Ill.) took home the team title with 18 points. The Lady Statesmen were sixth with 163 points as Wheaton completed the team sweep, tallying 34 points and edging out Olivet Nazarene by one point.
One week after his individual title at the Lamb-Kowhawk Invitational, Travis Sauer (Sr., Salina, Kan., Salina South HS) ran well again, placing seventh at 27:21.3 on the 8K course. All five of the scoring Statesmen runners placed in the top 30 as Demitrius Byrd (So., Detroit, Mich., Denby Tech HS) was 15th in 28:22.2, Carl Eaton (Sr., Cleveland, Ohio, Cuyahoga CC) was 16th in 28:23.2, Adam Gross (Sr., Herculaneum, Mo., Herculaneum HS) was 24th in 28:56.2, and Kendall Horrocks (Jr., Midvale, Utah, Jordan HS) was 29th in 29:39.3.
On the women's side, Tyne Crandell (So., Spanish Fork, Utah, Spanish Fork HS) led the way with a 20th-place finish in 21:04.9 on the 5K course. Staci Despain (Fr., Hurricane, Utah, Hurricane HS) was next in 24th place as she crossed the line in 21:18.2, while Kasey Kerr (Fr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) was 33rd in 22:09.6. Ashley Burk (So., Bussey, Twin Cedars HS) finished 37th in 22:40.3 and Jessica Fink (Sr., Denison, Denison HS) was 49th in 23:41.7.
Penn, coached by Richard Speas, will compete at the Midwest Classic Conference/NAIA Region VII meet, Nov. 6. The meet will count as both the conference meet and the national-qualifying regional meet.
