Oskaloosa--For the second year in a row, the William Penn Spirit Squad earned a Division I rating when it competed at the 2008 Iowa State Dance Team Championships at Veterans Memorial Auditorium last Friday.
College teams competed for Division I, II, and III ratings along with trophy placements and were judged on appearance, choreography, execution, technique, and general showmanship. To receive a Division I rating, teams had to score a minimum of 240 points.
Penn, which competed in the Division AA category in front of a crowd of 5,000 (including 275 high school teams), was awarded a Division I placement by scoring 246 total points. The squad also received perfect scores from every judge for appearance and showmanship.
Other colleges at the ISDTA competition included Buena Vista, Central, Coe, Grand View, Simpson, Morningside, Mount Mercy, St. Ambrose, Iowa Central CC, Kirkwood CC, Des Moines Area CC, Iowa State, Iowa, Northern Iowa, and Drake.
Members of Penn's competitive team included Kerri Anderson, Kinzy Shaw, Tiffany Hoch, Jennifer Miller, Casey Hull, Stephani Wickett, Jenni Caron, Fasha Yates, Chanon Opstvedt, and Krista Hunt. The team was led by coaches Rachael Beard and Kristin Libby and student assistant coach Ashley Fuller.
