Mount Vernon--Four individuals were victorious but it was not enough to lift the Statesmen wrestling team to a meet win as Penn lost its season-opening dual to Cornell 30-16 Tuesday.
Penn (0-1), ranked #11 in the NAIA, fell to the 12th-ranked Rams of NCAA Division III, who are now 3-2 in dual action this winter.
The evening started well for the visiting Statesmen as
Taylor Louie (So., West Covina, Calif., West Covina HS) claimed a 10-2 major decision victory over Micky Spiwak at 125 pounds.
Penn then lost by fall at 133 pounds, but
Marcus Cobbs (Jr., Chicago, Ill., Harper CC) put his squad back ahead at 7-6 with an 8-2 decision over Kevin Donahue at 141 pounds.
The Statesmen fell behind again, this time for good, with losses at five consecutive weights.
Karl Spain (So., Lafayette, La., Comeaux HS) finally stopped the Cornell momentum with a 7-5 decision over Robert Widmer at 197 pounds, while 285-pounder
Richard White (So., Edgewater, Fla., New Smyrna Beach HS) concluded the night with another navy blue and gold victory, pinning Isaac Hall in a time of 3:24.
Penn did win several scoring categories in the loss, however, tallying more reversals (3-1), escapes (7-6), and riding time points (2-1) than its host.
Next: Penn will close out its pre-holiday schedule by traveling to Dubuque to compete in the Dubuque Open Saturday. Action begins at 9 a.m.
