Penn (1-1) trailed Grand View 19-8 with only three matches remaining, but managed to pick up a forfeit and two falls to claim the victory.
Taylor Louie (So., West Covina, Calif., West Covina HS) opened the night on a positive note with an 8-2 decision victory over Travis Evans at 125 pounds.
The Statesmen struggled in the next three matches with losses at 133, 141, and 149 pounds.
Josh Swanson (So., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) reversed the tide with a dominating performance at 157 pounds, claiming a 17-2 technical fall win over Issiah Sullivan.
Aaron Palacios (So., Salinas, Calif., North Monterey HS) competed in one of the best matches of the night at 165 pounds, but unfortunately allowed a takedown in the final seconds to fall 6-5.
Penn also lost at 174 pounds before
T.J. Stuart (Jr., Eddyville, Eddyville-Blakesburg HS), suiting up for the first time since the 2005-2006 season, received a forfeit win at 184 pounds to begin the rally.
Grand View elected to move their normal 184-pounder, Marty Ball, up one weight to face off against
Karl Spain (So., Lafayette, La., Comeaux HS) at 197 pounds and the sophomore made the Vikings pay for that decision. Already leading 3-1 in the final minute, Spain was able to turn Ball and claimed the fall in a time of 6:20 to give Penn a 20-19 advantage.
The meet came down to the heavyweight matchup and it was a dandy. Grand View's Jeff Cain scored the match's first points with a reversal in the second period, but
Ryan Groom (Fr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) was able to reverse Cain in the final period and then pin him at the 6:10 mark to secure the win for the home squad.
Next: Penn returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Pella to compete in the Central Open. Action begins at 9 a.m.
