The Lady Statesmen (1-3), taking advantage of a double dip against the Badgers on their way down to Florida, fell 2-1 in the opener and 2-1 again in the nightcap.
Spring Hill claimed the first advantage of the day when it put two across in the bottom of the second inning.
Penn had runners on base in the first and second innings and several in the fourth frame, but could not answer the Badgers until the top of the sixth.
Tyanna Helton (Jr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Palomar CC) finally put the Lady Statesmen on the board with a leadoff home run in the sixth (her first of the year), but the next six Penn batters went down in order as the visitors dropped the opener 2-1.
Helton led Penn with a 2-3 performance as her team outhit Spring Hill 5-4.
Ashley Gustin (Jr., East Wenatchee, Wash., Wenatchee Valley CC) was 1-2 on the day with a single and a walk.
Ashley Johnson (Sr., Burlington, Southeastern CC) had a strong outing in the circle, tossing a complete game four-hitter, but still dropped her season mark to 1-1. The senior allowed two runs (both earned), while striking out nine against two walks.
Penn quickly jumped on top of Spring Hill in the nightcap when Helton singled home
Andrea Rensberger (So., Sioux City, Sioux City North HS) in the first inning. Rensberger opened the contest by reaching on an error by the second baseman.
Unfortunately, Penn could not muster any more offense as Spring Hill responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and held off the Lady Statesmen. Penn, who only had two runners in scoring position after the opening frame, outhit the Badgers 4-1.
Helton again led Penn by going 2-3 at the plate. Helton actually reached base in all three of her plate appearances (error).
Cassie Holt (Fr., Muskego, Wis., Muskego HS), who was 1-1 in the second contest, matched Helton by also reaching base in all three of her plate appearances (walk, hit by pitch).
Hannah Lugar (Fr., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) pitched very well through the first four innings of the nightcap and left the game with the lead. The freshman shut down the Badgers with no hits and no runs. She had two strikeouts against three walks.
Allysa Fligg (Sr., Agency, Nebraska-Omaha) entered in the fifth inning and was saddled with the loss after giving up unearned runs on a passed ball and a wild pitch. The senior (0-2) allowed two runs (none earned) on one hit. She gave up one walk as well.
