Oskaloosa--Nine Statesmen grapplers will compete against the best in the nation at this week's 52nd Annual NAIA Wrestling National Championships.

Penn will attempt to again finish high in the division, having placed in the top 15 as a team each of the past seven years since joining the NAIA in 2001-2002. The national tournament will be held in Oklahoma City, Okla. from Thursday-Saturday.

Normally, this wrestling nationals preview would include information about Penn's opening round opponents, but the NAIA has opted to not release any brackets, official or unofficial, until the evening before or the morning of the first round of competition.

Two Statesmen have qualified for nationals at 125 pounds. Taylor Louie (So., West Covina, Calif., West Covina HS) owns a 23-15 record, including eight falls, three major decisions, and one technical fall, while David Crow (So., Baumholder, Germany, Baumholder HS) owns a 12-22 record, including three falls and one major decision.

Dustin Howa (Sr., Price, Utah, Carbon HS) will represent Penn at 141 pounds. It is the third time he has qualified for nationals (also in 2006 and 2007), but the first time he will actually compete. The senior owns a 12-6 record with one fall, one major decision, and three technical falls.

Corey Johnson (Jr., West Park, Fla., Miramar HS) will enter the 149-pound bracket with a 17-19 record, including one fall and four major decisions.

Levi Davidshofer (Fr., New Market, Clarinda HS) will compete at 157 pounds. The freshman is 2-9 with one fall.

Josh Swanson
(So., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) has qualified at 165 pounds, but will likely not compete due to an elbow injury he suffered earlier this season. The sophomore is 19-7 this season with two falls, five major decisions, and six technical falls.

T.J. Stuart
(So., Eddyville, Eddyville-Blakesburg HS) is slated to compete at 174 pounds for the Statesmen. It is his second qualifying appearance, also wrestling in 2006. The sophomore is 7-8 with one fall and one major decision to his credit.

Karl Spain (So., Lafayette, La., Comeaux HS) has qualified for nationals at 197 pounds. The sophomore is 16-16 with one fall, three major decisions, and one technical fall.

Ryan Groom (Fr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) is Penn's biggest national qualifying, competing at the 285-pound weight class. The freshman is 9-6 with four falls.
