Taylor Louie won his opening match 6-4 in overtime
Oklahoma City, Okla.--On a tough first day of competition, only two Penn grapplers came away victorious at the 2009 NAIA Wrestling National Championships Thursday.

125-pounder Taylor Louie (So., West Covina, Calif., West Covina HS) and 174-pounder T.J. Stuart (So., Eddyville, Eddyville-Blakesburg HS) both finished Session 1 at 1-1 as all eight Statesmen qualifiers enter Session 2 on Friday in the consolation bracket. The other six Penn wrestlers all lost their first matches of the Championships.

Louie, the #4 seed on his side of the bracket, had to go to overtime, but successfully advanced to the next round with a 6-4 overtime win over unseeded Gary Brooks of Missouri Baptist. The sophomore unfortunately then fell by a 22-7 technical fall to Cory Borges of Montana State-Northern, the top grappler in his side of the bracket.

Louie will now face the winner of the Sam Vice (Briar Cliff) vs. Jeff Holmes (Dakota Wesleyan, S.D.) match in the consolation bracket.

Stuart, unseeded on his side of the bracket, came up with a big upset against another Missouri Baptist wrestler, taking down #3 seed Devian Golden 6-5.

The sophomore also fell to the loser's bracket, but gave his second opponent a good fight, dropping a 12-8 decision to #2 seed Shane Bennett of Dickinson State (N.D.).

Stuart will take on unseeded Philip Oudhuis of Campbellsville (Ky.) in the consolation bracket.

Both Louie and Stuart need to win at least three more matches to earn NAIA All-American status.

As a team, Penn is tied with Dakota Wesleyan for 24th with four points. Defending national champion Lindenwood (Mo.) has already sprinted out to a solid lead with 37 points and a tournament-high eight wrestlers still in the championship bracket. Southern Oregon is second with 29 points and seven wrestlers in the championship bracket.

Missouri Valley, the Central Qualifying Group champion, is third with 28 points and five wrestlers in the championship bracket.
