Penn (12-10, 2-0 MCC), who won 10-0 (5 innings) and 2-0, will meet the V-Hawks again tomorrow in another doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
The Lady Statesmen took an early 5-0 lead after the first frame and never looked back in the opener.
Tyanna Helton (Jr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Palomar CC) started the first inning onslaught with a two-run double, bringing home
Ashley Stream (Fr., Chariton, Chariton HS) and
Leah Mork (Jr., DeWitt, North Iowa Area CC).
Krystle Carr (Sr., Acton, Calif., Paraclete HS) then singled home Helton to make it 3-0, but the biggest hit of the day came off the bat of
Hanna Meinecke (So., Jefferson, Jefferson-Scranton HS) when she left the park for a two-run home run, scoring Carr. It is her second roundtripper of 2009.
Stream scored the sixth run of the game in the second inning during a double play that retired both Mork and Helton.
Hailey Dreyer (Jr., Twin Lakes, Wis., Dubuque) singled home Meinecke and
Cassie Holt (Fr., Muskego, Wis., Muskego HS) in the third and Carr brought home Helton on a single in the fourth frame.
The scoring concluded with an RBI double by Meinecke that tallied Carr.
Mork, Carr, and Holt were all 2-3 in the game, while Meinecke was 2-2. Helton and Meinecke finished with a team-high three RBIs each, while Carr and Dreyer each recorded two RBIs. Stream, Helton, Carr, and Meinecke all crossed home plate twice in the win.
Penn outhit Viterbo 11-3 in the win.
Hannah Lugar (Fr., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) tossed a terrific game to improve to 2-3 on the year. The freshman allowed just three hits in her first collegiate shutout. She struck out four against one walk.
The Lady Statesmen hit the ball nearly as well in the second game (9-2 advantage in hits), but that unfortunately did not correlate to scoring many runs. Fortunately, Penn needed little offense to finish the sweep.
Penn finally got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Helton doubled to score Mork. The Lady Statesmen then added its final run two frames later on a Carr single that scored pinchrunner
Katie Bunting (So., What Cheer, Wartburg).
Holt (3-3) and Stream (3-4) led the offense with three base knocks each.
Ashley Johnson (Sr., Burlington, Southeastern CC) pitched a gem to improve to 5-3 on the year. The senior allowed just two hits in her fourth shutout of 2009. She struck out 11 with just one walk.
