Penn (14-10, 4-0 MCC) won 9-0 (5 innings) and 5-0 to extend its season-high winning streak to six games. The Lady Statesmen, who won 10-0 (5 innings) and 2-0 yesterday, join Iowa Wesleyan as the only teams to go undefeated in the first weekend of league play (Grand View did not play).
The home team scored early and often in the opener, beginning with a triple by
Leah Mork (Jr., DeWitt, North Iowa Area CC) that brought home
Ashley Stream (Fr., Chariton, Chariton HS) in the first inning.
Tyanna Helton (Jr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Palomar CC) then singled in Mork and
Hanna Meinecke (So., Jefferson, Jefferson-Scranton HS) concluded the initial inning with a double that scored Helton to make it 3-0.
In the second frame,
Hailey Dreyer (Jr., Twin Lakes, Wis., Dubuque) hit an RBI single to tally
Stacie Gaskill (Sr., Lake Mills, Lake Mills HS), while Helton had the big hit with a three-run home run that also scored Stream and Dreyer to extend the advantage to 7-0. The roundtripper is Helton's third of 2009.
Krystle Carr (Sr., Acton, Calif., Paraclete HS) singled home Helton to start a two-run fourth inning, while Meinecke hit a sacrifice fly to center field in the next at-bat that scored
Kara Atkins (Fr., Burlington, Burlington HS) to end the scoring in the first game.
Helton led Penn with a 3-3 performance, including four RBIs and three runs scored. Stream was also 3-3 (three doubles) with two runs, while Mork had two hits and Meinecke posted two RBIs.
Ashley Johnson (Sr., Burlington, Southeastern CC) was nearly untouchable in the opener as she pitched a one-hit shutout, striking out seven to improve to 6-3 on the season.
Penn put up another three spot in the first inning of the nightcap as Atkins pounded an offering over the fence for a three-run home run, her third of the year.
Stream helped her team with two more runs in the fourth when she doubled home Dreyer and
Cassie Holt (Fr., Muskego, Wis., Muskego HS).
Akins topped Penn by going 2-4 with three RBIs and one run scored, while Mork and Meinecke were each 2-3. Stream had two RBIs in the contest.
The five runs were more than enough for
Allysa Fligg (Sr., Agency, Nebraska-Omaha) as the senior also stifled the V-Hawk batting order to just two hits in her first shutout at Penn. Fligg, who is now 5-4, struck out a season-high nine batters with one walk.
