Oskaloosa--Pitcher Ashley Johnson (Sr., Burlington, Southeastern CC) and first baseman Tyanna Helton (Jr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Palomar CC) again had superb weekends as they again garnered the weekly Midwest Collegiate Conference softball honors, announced by the league office Tuesday.

Johnson was named Pitcher of the Week, while Helton garnered Player of the Week laurels. Penn (14-10, 4-0 MCC) swept the four-game season series against league foe Viterbo Saturday and Sunday.

Johnson went 2-0 without allowing a run in 12 innings of work. The senior gave up just three hits, while striking out 18 against one walk. V-Hawk batters hit just .079 against her over the weekend.

Johnson is now 6-3 on the season with a 0.72 Earned Run Average in 58 1/3 innings. She has eight complete games with five shutouts and has struck out 79 batters against 19 walks. Opponents are hitting just .124 against the senior.

The award is the third for Johnson in her career.

Helton, who garners her third MCC weekly honor ever, led the Lady Statesmen at the plate with a .625 batting average (5-8), including two doubles, one home run, eight RBIs, and five runs. The junior also walked four times over the weekend.

Helton, who had at least one hit in three of the four games in which she played, had by far her best showing in Sunday's first game by going 3-3 (one home run) with four RBIs and three runs. She was also perfect in 27 fielding chances against Viterbo over the weekend.

The junior leads the team with a .418 batting average (28-67), including six doubles, three home runs (tied team high), a team-high 23 RBIs, and 11 runs. Helton continues to be extremely patient at the plate as well with 11 walks against just one strikeout.
