Penn (14-12) had its season-high six-game winning streak snapped by the Kohawks (15-5).
The visitors fell behind in both games, but managed to recover only to watch as Coe found two different ways to snag victories in the end.
Coe took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth of the first game, but the Lady Statesmen answered back with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth frame.
Ashley Stream (Fr., Chariton, Chariton HS) began the inning with a leadoff walk and scored two batters later on a double by
Tyanna Helton (Jr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Palomar CC).
Kara Atkins (Fr., Burlington, Burlington HS) then doubled in the following at bat to bring home pinchrunner
Katie Bunting (So., What Cheer, Wartburg) to knot the score at 2-2.
The Kohawks would not be denied in the opener, however, as, with one runner on and just one out in the bottom of the seventh, their shortstop homered to left center to end the game.
Ashley Johnson (Sr., Burlington, Southeastern CC) started the matchup, but had troubles, allowing two runs (both earned) on three hits in four innings of work. She struck out four against three walks.
Penn lost the hits battle 5-3 as Helton, Atkins, and
Cassie Holt (Fr., Muskego, Wis., Muskego HS) all had one double each.
Hannah Lugar (Fr., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) replaced Johnson in the fifth frame and was tagged with the loss to fall to 2-4 on the year. The freshman allowed two runs (both earned) on two hits. She struck out three with one walk.
The nightcap was nearly a mirror image of the first game as Coe again took the lead in the fourth, this time with one run. With its back to the proverbial wall, Penn responded with one run in the top of the seventh.
Helton hit a bases-loaded single to score
Hailey Dreyer (Jr., Twin Lakes, Wis., Dubuque), but Stream was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second base. Atkins then walked to again load the bases, but the Lady Statesmen could not take advantage.
Coe was unable to score in the bottom half of the inning though and extra innings ensued. After putting the visitors down in order in the top half, the Kohawks came to the plate and quickly put two on base.
Lady Statesmen relief pitcher
Allysa Fligg (Sr., Agency, Nebraska-Omaha) then managed to get a force out at third base for the first out and then a strikeout for the second out. Unfortunately, the senior went wild with one of her next deliveries, allowing a Kohawk to score from third with the winning run.
Fligg entered in the third inning and pitched well, allowing just two runs (one earned) on seven hits. She struck out six with no walks in falling to 5-5 on the year.
Lugar started the game and tossed two solid frames, giving up only one hit with two strikeouts.
Offensively, Helton and
Krystle Carr (Sr., Acton, Calif., Paraclete HS) were both 2-4 as Penn and Coe each had eight hits in the second game.
As evidenced in the bases-loaded seventh inning, Penn missed several scoring opportunities, leaving ten runners on base in the setback.
