Oskaloosa--In a doubleheader that featured what many figure to be the two best teams in the league, the Lady Statesmen softball team split a pair against Grand View in Midwest Collegiate Conference action Wednesday, falling 3-0 and then winning 3-0.

Penn (15-13, 5-1 MCC) and Grand View are ranked #2 and #1 respectively in the latest MCC ratings and both are currently receiving votes nationally.

The Lady Statesmen were limited to just five hits, including three in the first game.

One of the home team's base knocks in the opener came in the first inning when the Lady Statesmen threatened with the bases loaded and just one out.

Unfortunately, no one came across in that frame, leading to the Vikings (11-9, 1-1 MCC) claiming the first and only advantage with a two-run home run by Whitney Grimes in the fourth frame.

Penn tallied two hits in the fifth inning, including a lead-off single by Ashley Johnson (Sr., Burlington, Southeastern CC). The senior tried to stretch it to a double, however, and was thrown out on the attempt. Ashley Stream (Fr., Chariton, Chariton HS) singled later in the inning, but again nothing came of it and the Lady Statesmen remained down 2-0.

Grand View added an insurance run in the sixth and cruised to the victory.

Despite those costly mistakes, Johnson fared well in the opener as she allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. She struck out ten against two walks in falling to 6-4.

Hannah Lugar (Fr., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) relieved Johnson in the sixth and pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings. The freshman gave up just one hit with two strikeouts.

Penn was outhit 4-2 in the nightcap, but managed to string together all of its action in the third inning.

Christine Gamble (Fr., Pahrump, Nev., Pahrump Valley HS) led off the frame with a walk and moved to third when Hailey Dreyer (Jr., Twin Lakes, Wis., Dubuque) reached on an error.

The freshman then scored on a double by Stream in the next at bat. Leah Mork (Jr., DeWitt, North Iowa Area CC) then singled home Dreyer and Tyanna Helton (Jr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Palomar CC) concluded the inning by scoring Stream on a groundout to make it 3-0 in favor of the hosts.

Allysa Fligg (Sr., Agency, Nebraska-Omaha), who allowed just one runner past second base, was on her game to move to 6-5. The senior gave up just four Grand View hits in the shutout and struck out nine against only one walk.

Next: Penn is again at home next Tuesday to host Iowa Wesleyan in an MCC doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m.
