Penn (21-11, 6-4 MCC) rallied to win the opener 7-5, but then fell 13-5 in the nightcap.
Jenner hammered three balls over the fence in the doubleheader for his eighth, ninth, and tenth home runs of the year.
The Statesmen took the first lead of the first matchup, scoring three times in the fourth inning. Jenner led off the frame with a solo homer, while
Richie Hawley (Sr., Palmdale, Calif., Antelope Valley CC) doubled home pinchrunner
Nick Golich (Jr., Aurora, Ill., Waubonsee CC) and
Matt Casey (Sr., Palmdale, Calif., Antelope Valley CC) singled in Hawley. Golich was on the basepaths for
Ramon Cabral (Sr., Antioch, Calif., Laney CC) who was hit by pitch after the Jenner home run.
Waldorf scored once in its half of the fifth, but Penn was responded with two more in the bottom half. Jenner left the park with another solo shot, while Golich again pinchrunning for Cabral, scored once more, this time on another single by Casey.
The Statesmen nearly gave the game away, however, by allowing four runs in the sixth to tie the score at 5-5, but the host team's offense remedied the situation with two runs in the bottom half to take the lead for good.
Jenner and pinchrunner
Cory Randall (So., What Cheer, Tri-County HS) both scored on a double by Cabral. Randall was running for
Blake Willard (Jr., Tacoma, Wash., Green River CC) after the junior led off with a single.
Micah Spencer (Sr., Modesto, Calif., Indiana State) put the Warriors down in order (two strikeouts) in the seventh to claim his first save of the year.
Offensively, Jenner and Casey each had two hits, while Jenner finished with two RBIs and three runs scored. Casey and Cabral also had two RBIs, while Golich scored twice.
Chris Wedel (Sr., Wasco, Calif., Taft CC) pitched well, but his defense struggled behind him with three errors. The senior allowed five runs (none earned) on six hits. He struck out six batters with three walks to move to 5-2 on the year.
Penn scored the first run of the nightcap when
Jaime Ayala (Sr., Modesto, Calif., Modesto CC) scored on a
Steven Schultze (Sr., Simi Valley, Calif., LA Mission CC) double.
The wheels fell off the Statesmen train after that as Waldorf scored 11 unanswered runs, including three in the fourth and fifth frames and five more in the sixth inning.
Eddie Sobczak (Jr., University Place, Wash., Skagit Valley CC) prevented Penn from being mercy-ruled in the sixth with a solo home run, his fourth of 2009.
The Warriors sealed the win with two more runs in the seventh. The Statesmen had a final gasp in the bottom of the seventh as Jenner left the park one more time with a two-run shot, also scoring
Alex Chavez (Sr., Culver City, Calif., LA Harbor CC). Hawley also brought home Randall on a sacrifice fly earlier in the inning.
Chavez and Sobczak both had two hits, while Jenner finished with two RBIs.
Joey Grant (Sr., Soquel, Calif., College of San Mateo) started the game and lasted five innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits. He struck out four with one walk in falling to 3-3.
Tim Waters (Sr., Marysville, Wash., Everett CC) had a tough showing in a relief appearance, while
Daniel Holland (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif., Victor Valley CC) also made an appearance and struck out the only batter he faced in the seventh.
Next: Penn, who has already cancelled Sunday's single nine-inning game against Waldorf due to poor weather, will host Grand View Tuesday in a single nine-inning game at 5 p.m.
