Oskaloosa--The Statesmen baseball team held off Grand View 2-1 in a single nine-inning Midwest Collegiate Conference game Tuesday.

Penn (22-11, 7-4 MCC), who won twice at Grand View last week, completed the season sweep on the shoulders of staff ace Micah Spencer (Sr., Modesto, Calif., Indiana State) and power hitter Garrett Jenner (Jr., Jamul, Calif., Grossmont CC).

Hitless and trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, Jenner started the frame with a double to the left-center gap. He then scored in the next at bat on a single by Ramon Cabral (Sr., Antioch, Calif., Laney CC).

Jaime Ayala (Sr., Modesto, Calif., Modesto CC) drew a walk two batters later and then scored the go-ahead run on a single down the right field line by Steven Schultze (Sr., Simi Valley, Calif., LA Mission CC).

Staked to a lead, Spencer settled in from there and, at one point, recorded ten straight outs. He ran into trouble in the seventh and eighth innings, however, but battled through both jams to keep his team's small advantage.

Keith Rizor (Sr., Westminster, Calif., Orange Coast CC) then relieved Spencer in the ninth. After allowing a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt that moved the tying run into scoring position, the senior punched out the final two batters for his first save of the season.

Spencer's strong outing pushed his record to 7-0 in 2009. He allowed one run (unearned) on four hits and struck out eight batters against two walks.

Jenner was the offensive hero with a 3-4 performance at the plate, while Cabral, Schultze, and Blake Willard (Jr., Tacoma, Wash., Green River CC) each had one hit apiece.

Both teams had several scoring opportunities as the Vikings (8-18, 5-5 MCC) left eight men on base and Penn left six runners.

Next: Penn will travel to Clinton Thursday to face Ashford in an MCC doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
