Gavin Miles shot a one-under 69 to tie for medalist honors
Oskaloosa--Gavin Miles (Fr., East London, South Africa, Selborne College) had the best round of his collegiate career Thursday as the Penn men's golf team hosted the Southern Iowa Spring Invitational.

Penn finished second out of seven teams with a score of 297 (+17) at the par-70 Edmundson Golf Course. Central Black took the title, two strokes better than the Statesmen at 295 (+15).

Miles tied Dan Pattee of the Central Black squad with a score of one-under 69. Both individuals were even on the front side and finished one under on the back nine. Miles took the title unofficially on a card-off tiebreaker, scoring a birdie on the second handicap hole (#8), while Pattee parred the hole.

It is the first individual title for Penn this season and the first since Cole Reiman won the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships last April.

Seb Stobart (Fr., Ndola, Zambia, Simba International School) was next for Penn in fourth place with a 72, while Ian Minder (Fr., Muscatine, Muscatine HS) tied for 16th at 77. Seth Vernon (So., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) tied for 22nd with a 79, while Austin Stevens (Jr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) rounded out the varsity scores in 28th with an 81.

Penn also had a junior varsity team in competition and the squad placed fifth with a score of 317.

Lucas Troyer (Jr., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) topped the JV team as he tied for seventh at 75. Rob Sandburg (So., Fort Madison, Fort Madison HS) was next as he tied for 19th at 78.

Cory Sheeley (Jr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) tied for 24th with an 80, while Caleb Herman (So., Crawfordsville, WACO HS) tied for 33rd at 84 and Adam Stevens (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) was 41st at 92.

Three other team members played as individuals Thursday, including Cam Armitage (So., Delta, B.C., North Delta HS), who tied for tenth at 76, Willie Brasel (Sr., Warrensburg, Mo., Missouri Southern), who was 37th at 88, and Deon Bergeron (So., Lake Charles, Lake Charles HS), who was 40th at 91.

Next: Penn will travel to Indianola Tuesday to compete in the Simpson Invitational at the Indianola Country Club.
