Clinton--The Penn baseball team pounded out 26 hits in a double dip sweep of Ashford in Midwest Collegiate Conference action Thursday.

Penn (24-11, 9-4 MCC) defeated the Saints on the road 10-5 and 10-0 (5 innings).

Although being outhit 13-11 in the opener, the Statesmen took advantage of their opportunities, beginning with scoring the first two runs of the day in the top of the second frame. Nick Golich (Jr., Aurora, Ill., Waubonsee CC) and Jaime Ayala (Sr., Modesto, Calif., Modesto CC) each had run-scoring hits in the inning.

Steven Schultze (Sr., Simi Valley, Calif., LA Mission CC) gave Penn a 3-0 lead with an RBI single in the third, while Garrett Jenner (Jr., Jamul, Calif., Grossmont CC) tattooed a ball over the fence in the fourth for a two-run home run, his team-leading 11th of the season.

The visitors put the game out of reach in the sixth as Richie Hawley (Sr., Palmdale, Calif., Antelope Valley CC) had an RBI triple and Eddie Sobczak (Jr., University Place, Wash., Skagit Valley CC) doubled home a runner.

After Ashford cut the deficit to just three at 7-4 entering the final inning, Ramon Cabral (Sr., Antioch, Calif., Laney CC) secured the win by highlighting a three-run seventh with a two-run homer, his sixth of 2009.

Hawley, Schultze, and Golich all had two hits each, while Ayala, Jenner, Cabral, and Hawley all scored a game-best two runs each. Courtesy of their roundtrippers, Cabral and Jenner led the Statesmen with two RBIs apiece.

Joey Grant (Sr., Soquel, Calif., College of San Mateo) collected the win to improve to 4-3 on the season. The senior allowed four runs (all earned) on ten hits, while striking out seven with two walks.

Mark Appel (Jr., Glendale, Ariz., Gateway CC) made an appearance in the seventh in relief of Grant.

It was pure domination by the Statesmen in the nightcap as they outhit the Saints 15-2 and Chris Wedel (Sr., Wasco, Calif., Taft CC) nearly tossed his first no-hitter in a Penn uniform.

Hawley and Schultze tallied RBIs in the two-run first, while Jenner and Sobczak had RBIs in the second frame.

Penn blew the game open in the third, however as four runs crossed the plate, headlined by a two-run double by Cabral. Alex Chavez (Sr., Culver City, Calif., LA Harbor CC) and Ayala also had run-scoring base knocks in the inning.

Chavez and Ayala each collected their second RBIs of the game in the fourth as the day's scoring concluded.

Ayala and Jenner were both 3-4, while Sobczak was 2-3 and Schultze was 2-4 in the second matchup. Chavez, Ayala, and Cabral all posted two RBIs, while Jenner led all players with three runs scored. Ayala and Golich came home twice.

Although his teammates provided plenty of offense for him, Chris Wedel (Sr., Wasco, Calif., Taft CC) really did not need it as he mowed down the competition with ease, finishing two outs shy of a no-hitter. Wedel hit one batter with a pitch in the second frame, but did not allow a single runner on base via hit through 4 1/3 innings of work.

Unfortunately, the senior's no-no bid was broken up with a pair of singles in the bottom of the fourth. Wedel, who improved to 6-2 on the season, shut out Ashford on two hits. He also struck out eight with no walks.

Next: Penn will travel to Davenport Monday to face St. Ambrose in a single nine-inning MCC game at 6 p.m.
