Penn (25-11, 10-4 MCC), who had been on a downward spiral recently with four losses in five games, has revived itself by winning four straight to tie Mount Mercy atop the league standings with its 10-4 mark.
The Fighting Bees (13-16, 6-7 MCC) claimed the day's first lead with two runs in the bottom of the first, but the visiting Statesmen battled back with an impressive six-run second frame.
Richie Hawley (Sr., Palmdale, Calif., Antelope Valley CC) began the scoring by coming home on the first of two St. Ambrose errors in the inning. The hosts committed seven errors total, while Penn had two fielding mistakes in the contest.
Blake Willard (Jr., Tacoma, Wash., Green River CC) then added a two-run double, while
Nick Golich (Jr., Aurora, Ill., Waubonsee CC) brought home another run on a single.
Garrett Jenner (Jr., Jamul, Calif., Grossmont CC) eventually highlighted the inning the way he has all season, by clearing the fence in right field with a two-run home run, his team-leading 12th of the year.
Jenner's home run tally is the most since Brian Matsumoto also had 12 in 2004. The junior is just five roundtrippers shy of the program's single-season record of 17, set by Bill Holman in 1992.
Eddie Sobczak (Jr., University Place, Wash., Skagit Valley CC) matched Jenner in the fourth when he left the park with a two-run shot, his fifth of 2009.
Jaime Ayala (Sr., Modesto, Calif., Modesto CC) added two final insurance runs in the sixth inning on a single.
Golich led Penn with a 3-4 showing, while Jenner, Sobczak, and
Steven Schultze (Sr., Simi Valley, Calif., LA Mission CC) all had two hits each as Penn narrowly edged out the Fighting Bees 12-11 in hits.
Cory Randall (So., What Cheer, Tri-County HS) scored twice in pinchrunning situations, while Jenner also scored twice.
Micah Spencer (Sr., Modesto, Calif., Indiana State) continues to own a perfect record in 2009 and is now 8-0. The senior allowed three runs (two earned) on 11 scattered hits over eight innings of work. He struck out four with one walk.
Daley Benson (Sr., Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Yakima Valley CC) relieved Spencer in the ninth and tossed a scoreless and hitless frame, striking out one batter and walking one batter.
