Penn (28-14, 16-2 MCC), who won by scores of 1-0 and 5-2, now owns a four-game lead over Grand View (13-7), who lost twice to Waldorf Tuesday. Waldorf (10-6) and Mount Mercy (8-4) are both five games behind the Lady Statesmen in the standings.
With the sweep, the Lady Statesmen have now matched their season-best winning streak of seven games and have also won 14 of their last 15 games since starting the campaign at 14-13.
Stream single-handedly took down the host Queen Bees (21-15, 7-8 MCC) in the first game as she led off the contest with a solo home run in the top of the first inning.
The Penn bats went quiet after that (five hits total), but fortunately
Allysa Fligg (Sr., Agency, Nebraska-Omaha) was more than competent in the pitcher's circle to stave off the setback.
In improving to 12-5 on the year, Fligg shut out St. Ambrose on four hits in her 11th complete game of 2009. She struck out a season-high 12 batters with two walks. Only three runners managed to get into scoring position with just one of them advancing to third base.
Kara Atkins (Fr., Burlington, Burlington HS) topped the offense with a 2-3 showing, while Helton and
Cassie Holt (Fr., Muskego, Wis., Muskego HS) joined Stream with one hit as well.
After a short hiatus in the opener, the Penn offense returned to its recent terrific form by pounding out 13 hits in the nightcap.
Stream again kick-started her team in the early innings as she led off the first with a triple and then scored in the next at-bat on a
Leah Mork (Jr., DeWitt, North Iowa Area CC) single.
Penn scored two more runs in the third as Helton hit a solo home run and
Krystle Carr (Sr., Acton, Calif., Paraclete HS) singled home Atkins to make it 3-0. Helton's roundtripper is her team-leading eighth of the season and 28th of her career, leaving her just three shy of Kristina McNew's school career record of 31 home runs.
The Queen Bees rallied with one run in the bottom halves of the third and fourth innings to cut the deficit to 3-2, but the visitors secured the win with two insurance runs in the fifth frame.
Ashley Johnson (Sr., Burlington, Southeastern CC) opened the inning by doubling home Atkins, while Carr's single in the next at-bat scored Johnson.
Johnson, who did not pitch Tuesday, found a different way to contribute as she led her team with a 3-4 showing. Mork, Helton, Carr, and Holt were all 2-4 as well.
Hannah Lugar (Fr., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) moved to 7-5 overall as she allowed two runs (both earned) on six hits. The freshman struck out two with one walk. Beyond the two runs scored, only one other runner advanced into scoring position against Lugar.
