The Lady Statesmen (29-15, 17-3 MCC) lost the opener 4-2, but rebounded to win the nightcap 2-1. The loss snaps Penn's season-long seven-game winning streak, but the win kept the squad five games ahead of Waldorf in the MCC standings.
The hosts took the first lead of the afternoon when
Kara Atkins (Fr., Burlington, Burlington HS) doubled to score
Ashley Stream (Fr., Chariton, Chariton HS) in the bottom of the first inning.
Waldorf (19-11, 11-7 MCC) responded with two runs in the top of the second, but Penn answered by tying the game in the third on a bit of deja vu as Atkins again doubled to bring Stream home.
Unfortunately, the Warriors took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth and held on for victory.
Atkins was 2-3 with the two RBIs, while Stream had the only other hit with both runs scored. Penn, who struggled defensively with three errors, was outhit 7-3 in the setback.
Allysa Fligg (Sr., Agency, Nebraska-Omaha) fell to 12-6 with the loss. The senior allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits. She struck out five with only one walk.
Although Waldorf had just seven base knocks, they hit them all hard with one home run and five doubles.
All three runs of the second contest came early as the visitors scored first with a run in the top of the first frame.
Penn evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom half as the Atkins-Stream combination worked again, this time with Atkins hitting a single to score Stream.
Hailey Dreyer (Jr., Twin Lakes, Wis., Dubuque) then gave her squad its first lead of the game in the second inning on a single that plated
Cassie Holt (Fr., Muskego, Wis., Muskego HS).
Johnson took over from there, allowing just two runners (both in the third inning) to advance into scoring position the remainder of the matchup.
The senior allowed one run (earned) on four hits to move to 9-4 overall. She struck out eight with two walks.
The Penn offense had a little more success in the second game with a 7-4 edge in hits, led by Stream and Atkins who were both 2-3. Johnson, Holt, and Dreyer had one hit each.
