Penn (27-11, 12-4 MCC) won by scores of 10-0 (6 innings) and 6-0. By concluding the season sweep over the Fighting Bees (also winning 10-3 Tuesday), the Statesmen took over first place in the league standings, one half game ahead of Mount Mercy (11-4).
Jenner produced much of the Statesmen offense in the opener as he went a perfect 4-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored. The junior had a solo home run in the third and a three-run shot in the sixth to give him 14 for the season.
That tally ties him for second on the single-season home run list with Jaime Borruel (2002) and Alex Garcia (2002). Jenner is just three roundtrippers shy of the program's single-season record of 17, set by Bill Holman in 1992.
Jenner was just a triple shy of the cycle as he had a single in the first and a double in the fourth.
Steven Schultze (Sr., Simi Valley, Calif., LA Mission CC) also had a home run in the game, a two-run shot in the second frame.
Jaime Ayala (Sr., Modesto, Calif., Modesto CC) was 2-3 in the game, while Chavez went 2-4 with two runs.
Penn outhit St. Ambrose 12-5.
Although he really did not need it,
Chris Wedel (Sr., Wasco, Calif., Taft CC) gladly accepted the offensive support as he moved to 7-2 on the season. The senior recorded his team-best third shutout on five hits. He struck out seven with two walks.
The Statesmen pulled out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second in the nightcap as Schultze doubled home
Eddie Sobczak (Jr., University Place, Wash., Skagit Valley CC) and Chavez doubled in Schultze and Ayala.
Matt Casey (Sr., Palmdale, Calif., Antelope Valley CC) put his squad up 4-0 in the fourth when he sacrificed in
Richie Hawley (Sr., Palmdale, Calif., Antelope Valley CC).
Penn concluded its scoring in the fifth as Chavez crossed home plate on a wild pitch and Hawley singled in
Nick Golich (Jr., Aurora, Ill., Waubonsee CC), who was catching in place of
Ramon Cabral (Sr., Antioch, Calif., Laney CC). The senior has been recently sidelined with a hand injury, but is expected to return to action next week.
Although they did not score the remainder of the night, the Statesmen still had some fireworks as Chavez again doubled in the sixth inning. The two-bagger was his 20th of the year, breaking the program's single-season record of 19, set by Jaime Borruel (2002) and Travon Jackson (2007).
Hawley was 2-3 in the win, while Chavez finished 2-4. Penn owned an 8-3 advantage in hits.
Keith Rizor (Sr., Westminster, Calif., Orange Coast CC) pitched six strong innings to improve to 5-3 in 2009. The senior shut out St. Ambrose on three hits. He also struck out nine with two walks.
Joey Grant (Sr., Soquel, Calif., College of San Mateo) relieved Rizor in the seventh and tossed a perfect frame to end the twinbill.
"We are playing well right now," Statesmen Head Coach Mike Laird said. "Chris Wedel and Keith Rizor were able to command both sides of the plate. Our offense has come around even without cleanup hitter Ramon Cabral in the lineup."
