Penn shot a five-over 293 Saturday and then fired a 308 Sunday at the par-72 Oskaloosa Golf Course. The team, which started the third round eighth out of nine teams, passed Ashford, Waldorf, and Mount Mercy to finish fifth place at 1239 (304-334-293-308). The first two rounds of the Championships were held last October 13-14 at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City.
St. Ambrose led entering the final two rounds, but had a difficult third round to fall out of the lead. The Fighting Bees rebounded in the final day, however, to win the Championships by ten strokes over Grand View. St. Ambrose had a final score of 1166 (283-297-300-286), while Grand View finished second at 1176 (298-290-289-299).
Adam White of St. Ambrose went wire-to-wire to claim the tournament medalist honor at five-under 283 (68-71-73-71), while Adam Lindsay of Iowa Wesleyan was the tournament runner-up at one-under 287 (73-73-71-70).
Gavin Miles (Fr., East London, South Africa, Selborne College) and
Seth Vernon (So., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) were the only two Penn golfers to play all four rounds of the fall/spring tournament.
Miles played tremendously over the weekend, actually tying for the best two-round score at 141 (69-72). Unfortunately, the freshman had too much ground to make up from the fall and finished in a tie for 14th overall at 303 (78-84-69-72). His three-under 69 tied for the lowest score of the weekend and the second-lowest of the entire four-round tournament.
Vernon had a great Saturday as well, shooting an even-par 72, but struggled to finish Sunday's round and carded an 82. For the entire tournament, the sophomore placed 27th among the 32 players that competed in all four rounds with a score of 329 (87-88-72-82).
Seb Stobart (Fr., Ndola, Zambia, Simba International School),
Ian Minder (Fr., Muscatine, Muscatine HS), and
Lucas Troyer (Jr., Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS) all just played this weekend's final two rounds of the Championships.
Stobart shot a pair of 75's to finish in a tie for 16th at 150, while Minder shot a 156 (77-79) to tie for 25th. Troyer rounded out the team's scoring by shooting a 174 (90-84) to tie for 40th.
Penn's 2008-2009 season concluded this weekend.
