Penn (27-13) was limited to just five hits in the opener as the Bobcats scored the game's only two runs in the second and held on for victory.
Nick Golich (Jr., Aurora, Ill., Waubonsee CC) led the offense with a perfect 3-3 performance, while
Curtis Graham (So., Albia, Simpson) was also strong at 2-3.
Joey Grant (Sr., Soquel, Calif., College of San Mateo) was on the unfortunate end of a pitcher's duel that he actually won. The senior, who dropped to 4-4 on the year, allowed two runs (none earned) on four hits. He struck out four with one walk in six innings of action.
Game two featured much more offense as the two squads combined for 20 runs on 27 hits.
The Statesmen fell behind early, but battled back to take a 5-4 lead entering the bottom of the fourth. Unfortunately, Peru State tied the game at 5-5 in that half frame and pulled away for good with a six-run fifth inning.
Alex Chavez (Sr., Culver City, Calif., LA Harbor CC) topped Penn at the plate with a 3-4 performance, including a team-best two runs scored.
Golich was 2-3, while
Garrett Jenner (Jr., Jamul, Calif., Grossmont CC) and
Blake Willard (Jr., Tacoma, Wash., Green River CC) were both 2-4. Golich tied for the game high with three RBIs, while Jenner had two RBIs.
Penn utilized four pitchers in the game as
Mark Appel (Jr., Glendale, Ariz., Gateway CC) was saddled with the loss to fall to 1-1. Willard, making his Statesmen pitching debut, had the best showing of the foursome, allowing just one run (unearned) in one inning of work. He struck out one and walked one batter.
