Oskaloosa--Penn softball pitcher Allysa Fligg (Sr., Agency, Nebraska-Omaha) and star hitter Tyanna Helton (Jr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Palomar CC) were huge contributors to their team's success last week as they were both awarded Midwest Collegiate Conference weekly laurels, announced by the league office Tuesday.
Fligg was named MCC Pitcher of the Week for the first time in her career, while Helton garnered Player of the Week honors for the third time in 2009 and fourth time in her career.
#21 nationally-ranked Penn was successful in a very busy week on the diamond, going 9-1 against league competition.
Fligg owned a 4-0 record with a 1.19 Earned Run Average in 29 1/3 innings of action. She struck out 30 against four walks. The senior's best outing came against Iowa Wesleyan last Monday as she tossed her first no-hitter at Penn with ten strikeouts and one walk.
For the year, Fligg is 16-6 with a 1.95 Earned Run Average in 139 2/3 innings. She has 15 complete games with six shutouts (five solos, one combined) and has struck out 152 batters against 36 walks.
Helton hit .474 (18-38) last week with six doubles, four home runs, 15 RBIs, and 12 runs scored. The junior had three three-hit games and three more two-hit showings and tallied a week-high six RBIs against Mount Mercy last Thursday. She had a hit in all but one of the ten games in which she played.
During the week, Helton tied and then broke the school's all-time career home run record and currently has 32 roundtrippers in her three-year career.
For the year, Helton is hitting .429 (75-175) with 17 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs, 61 RBIs, and 37 runs scored. She also owns a .743 slugging percentage and a .490 on-base clip.
The awards are the eighth and ninth of the year for Penn.
