Oskaloosa--Despite not winning a game in last week's conference tournament, the Penn softball team did not fall in the national rankings, but nor did it rise to put itself in a position to reach nationals as the NAIA's eighth and final national rating was released today.
Penn (40-18, 28-4 MCC), who lost both of its games at last week's Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament, ended 2009 again rated 21st in the nation with 214 points.
Unfortunately, the seventh and final at-large bid to the national tournament went to #14 Concordia (Calif.) as the national qualifiers were announced today. The Lady Statesmen were five at-large slots behind Concordia in the poll for the final bid.
California Baptist finished the campaign again #1 for the seventh week in a row with 683 points and 22 first-place votes. Lubbock Christian (Texas) remained in second with 663 points and two first-point votes. The final three teams in the top five were also the same as Dickinson State (N.D.) was third, Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) was fourth, and William Carey (Miss.) rounded out the five.
Penn ended the year as the highest-ranked institution in the state of Iowa as Morningside also received points in 33rd place with 38 points. MCC Tournament champion Waldorf moved into the receiving votes section as well, sitting in 40th place with seven points.
