Oskaloos native Shawn VanRheenen was one of many Statesmen football players who spent time with local preschoolers
Oskaloosa--As part of the NAIA's Champions of Character initiative, members of the William Penn University football team volunteered their time with local youths this spring.
Players interacted with preschool students from Oskaloosa Elementary, Oskaloosa YMCA, and Sunshine Preschool during the month of April. Each player was responsible for volunteering one hour of service, while many of them actually volunteered on more than one occasion.
Activities that players participated in included reading to students, playing games on the playground or in the gym, and interacting in everyday events.
"This is our third year performing this service and both the kids and our players love it and our guys look forward to it every spring," Assistant Football Coach
Aaron Hafner said. "The cheerleaders also helped and were responsible for the same amount of time as our players."
