Oskaloosa--William Penn University co-men's golf coach Wade Steinlage has announced the signing of Mattias Carlsson to a letter of intent to attend the University this fall and compete for the men's golf program.

Carlsson, the son of Stefan and Maud Carlsson, is a native of Uddevalla, Sweden and graduated from Agnebergskolan HS in 2008.

Carlsson began his golf career at the age of 11 and shot his first 18-hole round under par at the age of 17. His lowest career score was a four-under 68, while he has also been three under on nine holes.

A seven-time tournament champion, Carlsson won the junior championship and senior match play championship at his home course, Torreby Golf Club, in 2008. He has represented the club's first team since 2006.

A strong student as well, Carlsson graduated in the top 30% of his class in business and was a member of the pupil's school board. He also served as the chairman of the business education board.

"I am extremely pleased that Mattias has decided to attend William Penn," Steinlage said. "He has great credentials both on the course and in the classroom and I expect him to be an immediate contributor to our program. Hopefully he is the first of many European players to join our team."
