The Statesmen (2-1-1) had some scoring chances, but they proved to be few and far between as both teams played very methodically throughout with well-sustained possessions.
Penn got on the board first in the 37th minute when
Matt Absolon (Fr., Huddersfield, England, Shelley College) tallied his first collegiate goal off a headed pass from
Jacob Plocher (Sr., West Plains, Mo., West Plains HS). The assist is Plocher's second of 2009.
The play all started on a set kick from
Jamie Gibbons (Sr., West Des Moines, Iowa Western CC) outside the box.
The hosts entered halftime with that 1-0 lead, but the train derailed in the second half as the visiting Wolves managed to score in the 56th, 61st, and 82nd minutes to put the game out of reach.
Nik Rule (Sr., Idaho Falls, Idaho, Skyline HS) cut the lead in half at 3-2, but it was much too late as he scored with only six seconds remaining. The senior now has a team-leading five goals this fall. The assist went to
Eric Razo (Jr., Joliet, Ill., Joliet CC), his first as a Statesmen.
Rule led Penn with two shots as the team produced six shots compared to 15 by Cardinal Stritch.
Tadeo Cavazos (Sr., Baytown, Texas, Lee HS) had seven saves against the three goals allowed.
Next: Penn remains in Oskaloosa for its lone game next week as the Statesmen host Midland Lutheran (Neb.) Sunday at 3 p.m.
