Melisa Wink tallied her second career two-goal game in the win
Oskaloosa--Melisa Wink (So., Brookfield, Ill., Lyons Township HS) was determined to not let her team be forced into overtime Saturday as she scored twice to lift the Lady Statesmen to a 3-2 win over Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) in non-conference play.

The Lady Statesmen (2-2), who outshot the Wolves 18-9, were answered fairly quickly on both of their first two goals.

Wink put Penn up first with a goal in the 25th minute assisted by Stephanie Deck (Fr., Plain City, Utah, Fremont HS). It is Deck's first assist of 2009.

With only seconds remaining until halftime, Cardinal Stritch scored to tie the game at 1-1.

It took until nearly midpoint of the second half for either team to score again, but when one did, so did the other.

Julieth Tellez (Jr., Mendota, Ill., Joliet CC) put her lone shot of the game in the back of the net in the 68th minute off a pass from Hillary Gallego (Jr., Arlington, Texas, Mansfield Summit HS). It was Tellez's first goal in the navy blue and gold and Gallego's second assist of the year.

Unfortunately, the Wolves responded only seconds later to knot the contest at 2-2.

Wink was not done offensively, though, putting one more shot past the CSU goalkeeper in the 78th minute, giving the sophomore her first multiple-goal game of the year and her second at Penn (last came on September 14, 2008 vs. Culver-Stockton).

Wink is now tied with Erika Larson (Fr., Ogden, Utah, Fremont HS) for the team lead with two goals.

The Wolves did not find an answer for Wink's score and Penn evened its 2009 record and kept CSU winless in 2009 (0-3).

Lauren Terrell (Fr., Chandler, Ariz., Chandler HS) led her squad with six shots, while Wink had four and Larson tallied three.

Katie Burnett (Jr., Mesa, Ariz., Desert Ridge HS) picked up four saves against the two goals for the win.
