Ankeny--The Statesmen golf team made adjustments after the first day to shoot a better score the second and final day, but so did most of the field as Penn opened its fall 2009 season at the Grand View Viking Classic Tuesday and Wednesday.

Penn finished ninth out of 13 teams at the par-71 Otter Creek Golf Course, the site of next spring's Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships. The Statesmen shot 313 the first day and 300 the second day for a final score of 613.

Host Grand View claimed the team title at 571 (290-281), while Iowa State JV was second at 576 (282-294).

Josh Manske of Grand View took home medalist honors by firing a score of four-under 137 (72-65).

A very young team represented Penn's varsity during the week. New freshmen Mattias Carlsson (Uddevalla, Sweden, Agnebergskolan HS), with scores of 78 and 75, and Adriaan de Villiers (Akasia, South Africa, Akasia HS), with scores of 72 and 81, topped Penn by tying for 26th at 153.

Returners Cam Armitage (Jr., Delta, B.C., North Delta HS), with scores of 83 and 71, and Sebastian Stobart (So., Harare, Zimbabwe, St. Georges College), with scores of 80 and 74, tied for 33rd at 154.

Brent Lurie (Fr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Beaulieu College) finished in a tie for 57th with a final score of 166 (86-80).

Penn also had a second team in competition. The first JV team, named William Penn Gold, finished 13th with a final tally of 670 (342-328). Seth Vernon (Jr., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) led the team by tying for 43rd with a score of 158 (79-79), while Geoff Dammann (Fr., Wyoming, Midland HS) was next in a tie for 55th with a score of 164 (84-80).

Will Poterek (Jr., Lee, Ill., Indian Creek HS) was 61st at 173 (89-84), Caleb Herman (Jr., Crawfordsville, WACO HS) was 62nd at 176 (90-86), and Austin Stevens (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) was 63rd at 177 (92-85) to round out the team's scoring.

Next: Penn travels to Marion Saturday and Sunday to compete in the Cropper Classic hosted by Mount Mercy at Hunters Ridge Golf Course.
