Taking on the biggest field it will face all year, the Statesmen finished ninth out of 24 teams at the par-72 Hunters Ridge Golf Course. The Statesmen shot 308 the first day and 303 the second day for a final score of 611.
NAIA program William Woods (Mo.) claimed the team title at 576 (286-290), while NCAA Division III program Illinois Wesleyan was second at 580 (296-284).
The tournament was talent-laden as four teams from the NAIA were either ranked or receiving votes at the end of last spring and two teams from NCAA Division III placed in the top 19 of last year's national tournament.
Penn placed second among six varsity teams from the Midwest Collegiate Conference, trailing only St. Ambrose who finished third overall.
Nick Wilson of William Woods took home medalist honors by firing a score of seven-under 137 (67-70).
Adriaan de Villiers (Fr., Akasia, South Africa, Akasia HS) led the Statesmen by tying for 27th with a score of 150 (75-75).
Sebastian Stobart (So., Harare, Zimbabwe, St. Georges College), with scores of 77-78, and
Mattias Carlsson (Fr., Uddevalla, Sweden, Agnebergskolan HS), with scores of 78-77, tied for 53rd place at 155.
Cam Armitage (Jr., Delta, B.C., North Delta HS) tied for 61st at 156 (78-78).
Brent Lurie (Fr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Beaulieu College) was the lone player who did not shoot consistently, but his team-best 73 on Sunday helped him to finish in a tie for 72nd at 158 (85-73). A total of 120 players were in competition at the Classic.
Next: Penn travels to Peosta next Sunday and Monday to compete in the Clarke Fall Invitational at Thunder Hills Country Club.
