Oskaloosa--William Penn University co-men's golf coach
Wade Steinlage has announced the signing of
Brent Lurie to a letter of intent to attend the University this fall and compete for the men's golf program.
Lurie, the son of Arnold and Beverley Lurie, is a native of Johannesburg, South African and comes to Penn from Beaulieu College.
Three-time junior champion at Kyalami Country Club, Lurie earned full colors for golf from his school three times.
Lurie was undefeated in his school's league from 2004-2008 and was team captain in 2008. He represented Beaulieu at the Dainfern Inter School Golf Tournament in 2006 and 2007, finishing 11th once out of 120 players. Lurie also qualified to compete in the largest inter-school competition in South Africa at the Gary Player Country Club-Sun City and placed in the top 20.
After graduating, he also coached golf at Beaulieu College in 2009.
Away from Beaulieu, Lurie played in numerous South African Golf Foundation tournaments, winning five and finishing high in most others. He also played in the Kyalami Golf Club's second scratch league from 2004-2009.
A multi-sport athlete, Lurie also excelled in rugby, soccer, squash, and cricket, earning half colors in all sports in 2008.
Lurie was also a solid student, representing the Student Representative Council. He was a member of the Wildlife Club and spent time at Forrest Farm, volunteering with mentally handicapped and disabled individuals.
"Brent has overcome a great deal in his life and the fact that he is such a great athlete is remarkable," Steinlage said. "We are extremely happy to add him to our team at William Penn and expect big things from him."
