Penn (3-3-1, 0-0-1 MCC) bent, in being outshot 38-14, but did not break against the Vikings (2-6-1, 0-0-1 MCC).
The host team surprisingly found the back of the net first Saturday as
Erika Larson (Fr., Plain City, Utah, Fremont HS) stuck a shot from 20 yards out past the Grand View keeper in the 64th minute to give the Lady Statesmen a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, the Vikings were resilient and relentless and finally tied the game at 1-1 in the 79th minute.
Although both sides had chances in the final minutes, neither could score and they played extra periods. It was much of the same in the overtimes as Penn fought off numerous scoring opportunities by Grand View to earn the tie.
Larson,
Lauren Terrell (So., Chandler, Ariz., Chandler HS),
Melisa Wink (So., Brookfield, Ill., Lyons Township HS), and
Victoria Schiebel (Jr., Mansfield, Texas, Mansfield HS) all tallied a team-best three shots in the matchup.
Katie Burnett (Jr., Mesa, Ariz., Desert Ridge HS) also had a tremendous performance in goal as she posted 20 saves to preserve the tie.
