Oskaloosa--On a very chilly afternoon with strong winds swirling, the Lady Statesmen soccer team fell 5-1 to Avila (Mo.) at home in non-conference play Tuesday.

The Lady Statesmen (4-6-1) kept the Eagles scoreless for more than one half of the first stanza, but once the visitors broke free, there was no stopping them.

Avila scored three times in the first half, including two of Danielle Price's three goals.

The Eagles added two more goals in the second period before Penn finally got on the board with a Brittany Hajicek (So., Grand Prairie, Texas, Mansfield Timberview HS) goal in the 82nd minute off a pass from Melisa Wink (So., Brookfield, Ill., Lyons Township HS).

The goal is Hajicek's team-leading sixth of 2009, while Wink's assist is her second.

Penn was outshot 16-9 and had four players with two shots apiece.

Kristen Dolen (Sr., Independence, Mo., William Chrisman HS) and Katie Burnett (Jr., Mesa, Ariz., Desert Ridge HS) combined for nine saves in the loss.
