Oskaloosa--The Penn softball team again garnered national recognition as one of the smartest teams in the NAIA as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association named its top academic squads.

Penn, coached by Mike Christner, was 23rd overall with a 3.176 team Grade Point Average. The Lady Statesmen have claimed the honor in seven of the past eight years. Bethel led all NAIA teams with a 3.545 GPA.

Penn finished the 2009 season with 12 academic all-conference players and one NAIA Scholar-Athlete. Only Grand View, in 11th with a 3.222 GPA, was higher than Penn among Midwest Collegiate Conference programs.

The Lady Statesmen were 40-18 overall (28-4 MCC) a year ago. Penn won the league title for the fourth time in eight years.
