La Crosse, Wis.--The Penn men's soccer team fought to the very end but a foul call against the Statesmen led to their demise in falling 1-0 in double overtime to Viterbo in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament Quarterfinals Sunday.

The #7-seeded Statesmen (7-9-1) played even with the #2-seeded V-Hawks for just over 102 minutes, but it all turned south quickly for the visitors as a Penn player was called for a foul in the Viterbo box.

The foul set up a penalty kick opportunity for Jamie Robertson and he slipped his shot past Statesmen senior goalkeeper Tadeo Cavazos (Baytown, Texas, Lee HS) to clinch the victory. Cavazos finished with five saves in the contest.

The V-Hawks will now host #3 seed Grand View in the tourney semifinals next Sunday.

Penn was outshot 15-5, but only trailed in corner kick attempts 6-5. Nik Rule (Sr., Idaho Falls, Idaho, Skyline HS) led his team with two shots.

The loss ends the collegiate careers of eight seniors, including Cavazos, Rule, Rudy Bear (Baytown, Texas, Sterling HS) Vince Beseau (Florissant, Mo., Hazelwood Central HS), Jamie Gibbons (Sr., West Des Moines, Iowa Western CC), Jacob Plocher (West Plains, Mo., West Plains HS), Matt Saner (Sr., West Plains, Mo., Neosho CC), and Brian Smith (Joliet, Ill., Joliet CC).
