Christa Subbert now has 1,001 points in her 65-game career (15.4 points per game)
Oskaloosa--It took Christa Subbert (Jr., Stanton, Stanton HS) just three games into her junior year to reach a milestone few players ever attain as the Lady Statesmen basketball came from behind to win its 2009-2010 home opener 78-68 over Dana (Neb.) in non-conference play Tuesday.

The Lady Statesmen (2-1) trailed 40-28 at intermission, but exploded for 50 second-half points on 51.6% shooting to upend the Vikings (0-2).

Subbert became just the 18th player in program history to score 1,000 points in a career as she hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds remaining. The junior, who now has 1,001 points in 65 games (15.4 points per contest), put up 20 points in the win. Subbert was her strongest at the charity stripe, finishing 7-8 on the evening. She paced her squad to a great performance at the line as Penn made 24 of their 30 attempts (80.%).

Subbert already has 51 points in three games this year for an average of 17.0 points per contest. She scored 399 points (13.3 ppg) as a freshman and put up 551 points (17.2 ppg) during her sophomore campaign.

Trailing by 12 at halftime at 40-28, the Lady Statesmen actually gave up the first four points of the second stanza to fall behind 44-28. The home team flipped a switch at that point, however, and outscored Dana 24-2 in a span of less than six minutes to go up 52-46 with 13:38 remaining.

The run was fueled by a pair of three-pointers by both Subbert and Samantha Darley (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa CC), who finished with a game-high 21 points on 7-14 shooting (3-8 3PT, 4-4 FT).

The margin remained in single digits until the very end, but the Vikings never drew closer than three points. Ahead by just four points with 1:24 left in regulation, Penn took to the stripe and knocked down its final six free throws to pull away for the victory.

The Lady Statesmen actually shot better than the Vikings overall with a 40.4%-39.3% edge. The hosts also maintained possession better with a 14-16 edge in turnovers. Penn also won battles in blocks (3-0) and steals (4-2).

Carleigh Hobson (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Antelope Valley CC) reached double figures as well with 13 points off the bench, including a pair of trifectas, while Janice Adams (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Austin HS) added six points in a non-starting role. Adams also topped the rebounding effort with nine boards.

Nancy Chicas (Sr., San Francisco, Calif., San Mateo CC) and Chandra Melaragno (Sr., Hartville, Ohio, Marlington HS) both contributed five points in the win. Chicas played the point guard role very well with a contest-best eight assists against only three turnovers, while Melaragno had a team-high two steals.

"We played a rough first half and went away from some things we do well," Lady Statesmen Head Coach Brian Spielbauer said. "We got back into it in the second half, though, and played the way we are capable of playing. It was a great team win and the win was that much more special with Christa Subbert reaching 1,000 points in her career in just the third game of her junior season."

"We are happy with the win and are now looking forward to a good battle with William Woods on Friday," Spielbauer added.
