A pair of 125-pounders led the way as
Taylor Louie (Jr., West Covina, Calif., West Covina HS) and
Matt Chustz (Sr., Manassas Park, Va., Manassas Park HS) were both in the top eight in the Gold bracket of the sport's lowest weight class.
Louie won his first match via fall in a time of 1:48, but then fell in the quarterfinals to fall to the consolation bracket. From there, the junior won two more matches, both by decision, to take fifth place overall.
Chustz lost his opening match, but rebounded to reel off three consecutive wins, including one fall and one decision in overtime to finish seventh at 125 pounds.
David Crow (Jr., Baumholder, Germany, Baumholder HS) succumbed in his opening action, but then took a win via injury default and pinned his next opponent in a time of 6:20 to reach the eighth-place match. Unfortunately, the junior lost that matchup and took home eighth with a 2-2 mark in the 133-pound Gold bracket.
Bobby Proffitt (Fr., Marshalltown, East Marshall HS) began his day in the 285-pound Bronze bracket with back-to-back wins by decision, but unfortunately could not go undefeated overall in falling in the championship match and ending his day at 2-1.
A few other individuals also won one match Saturday, but failed to place at the Open.
Next: Penn is off for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend before traveling to Indianola to compete in the Simpson Invitational on Saturday, December 5. Some individuals will also be in action the following day at the UNI Open in Cedar Falls.
