Penn (6-4) shot just 33.8% from the field (23-68), while the Defenders hit just over half of their attempts at 50.9% (27-53).
The game was tight throughout with neither team holding a lead larger than seven points.
The squads walked to their respective locker rooms tied at 29-29, but Dordt (3-5) came out a bit stronger after the break to take the lead.
The visitors remained on top until
Melissa Johnson (Sr., Smithfield, Utah, Skyview HS) hit a jumper to put Penn up 38-37 at the 15:39 mark. Unfortunately, that was the last advantage the Lady Statesmen would own.
The score was tied three more times in the ensuing minutes, but the Defenders eventually pulled away. Penn did get within three points in the final minute (69-66), however, but its opponent made three of its final four free throws and Penn missed its last two shots to conclude the contest.
Janice Adams (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Austin HS) topped the Lady Statesmen with 17 points on 7-11 shooting. The senior just missed a double-double with nine rebounds and also blocked two shots in the setback.
Rachel Butler (Jr., Anaheim, Calif., Cerritos CC) was next with 13 points, while
Christa Subbert (Jr., Stanton, Stanton HS) had 12 points and
Raven House (So., New Orleans, La., Cabrini HS) added ten.
Nancy Chicas (Sr., San Francisco, Calif., San Mateo CC), with a team-high five assists, and
Samantha Darley (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa CC), with a Penn-best two three-pointers, both contributed six points.
The Lady Statesmen were able to stay close by committing just 15 turnovers compared to 22 mistakes by Dordt and turned that into a 20-10 advantage for them in points off turnovers.
The Lady Statesmen also held an advantage in free throws made (17-15) and steals (13-5).
