Oskaloosa--Strong efforts by the team's top three players could not get the Lady Statesmen basketball team over the hump as it fell 75-64 to Valley City State (N.D.) in non-conference play Friday.

The trio of Christa Subbert (Jr., Stanton, Stanton HS), Nancy Chicas (Sr., San Francisco, Calif., San Mateo CC), and Samantha Darley (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa CC) combined for 52 points, but Penn (6-5) only shot 39.3% for the game.

The Lady Statesmen scored the first bucket of the game and then led again at 4-2, but those were unfortunately the only advantages the hosts held all night.

Penn, who went into the locker room trailing 34-28, narrowed the deficit to five in the early minutes of the second stanza, but never came any closer.

Subbert paced her team with 19 points on 7-14 shooting, while Chicas had an efficient 18-point effort, going 5-6 from the field and 7-7 at the free-throw line. Darley added 15 points, including three three-pointers.

Darley also had a game-high five assists, while Subbert led all players with two blocks. Chandra Melaragno (Sr., Hartville, Ohio, Marlington HS) collected three steals and Janice Adams (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Austin HS) pulled down a team-best six rebounds.

Next: Penn stays at home Saturday to host another Dakota Athletic Conference team in #6 nationally-ranked Jamestown (N.D.) at 3 p.m.
