Penn (7-5) gave up the first point of the game just 1:08 in and then never trailed again in claiming its second win over a preseason top-25 team this year. The Lady Statesmen also defeated #25 Haskell Indian Nations (Kan.) 75-70 on October 31.
The hosts were strongest on the defensive end, limiting the Jimmies (8-2) to just 31.3% from the field, while shooting 37.9% themselves.
The Lady Statesmen pulled out to a game-best 15-point lead at 18-3 midway through the first half and cruised to a 40-27 halftime advantage.
The Jimmies slowly chipped away, however, and with a 7-0 run, they had climbed to within three at 57-54 with 7:06 left in regulation. Fortunately, Penn responded with six unanswered points in just over one minute to push the lead back to nine at 63-54 and Jamestown never came closer than five points again.
The big three of
Samantha Darley (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa CC),
Nancy Chicas (Sr., San Francisco, Calif., San Mateo CC), and
Christa Subbert (Jr., Stanton, Stanton HS) again led the Lady Statesmen charge.
Darley topped all scorers with 16 points, while Chicas managed 15 points and Subbert had 14 points. Chicas was the most efficient of the trio, going 6-10 from the field (1-2 3-PT) and 2-2 at the free-throw line. Penn gained a big edge at the charity stripe, finishing 25-32, while Jamestown was just 18-26.
Chicas and Subbert tied for the team lead with three assists each, while Chicas and
Chandra Melaragno (Sr., Hartville, Ohio, Marlington HS) recorded three steals apiece. Subbert pulled down a squad-high eight rebounds to narrowly miss a double-double.
Rachel Butler (Jr., Anaheim, Calif., Cerritos CC) added eight points, while
Janice Adams (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Austin HS) tallied six and
Raven House (So., New Orleans, La., Cabrini HS) and
Carleigh Hobson (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Antelope Valley CC) both contributed five points to the win.
Penn committed just 16 turnovers, compared to the 18 mistakes by the Jimmies (17-14 advantage in points off turnovers). The team also had a 13-6 edge in steals.
