Mount Vernon--A freshman led a small group of Statesmen wrestlers at the Cornell Matman Invitational Sunday.

As a team, Penn placed sixth out of seven squads with 15 points. Wartburg ran away with the team title with 171 points and eight champions, outdistancing host Cornell (114 points).

Alfredo Velasquez (Fr., Fontana, Calif., AB Miller HS) was the lone Statesmen grappler to claim a win as he finished 3-2 at 141 pounds. The freshman lost his opening match, but then reeled off two consecutive falls, both in the second period, before taking a medical forfeit victory to reach the third-place match.

Unfortunately, Velasquez lost 5-1 in that match to take fourth.

Next: Penn returns to Oskaloosa for the first time this year for the First Annual William Penn Open Saturday. Action begins at 9 a.m. in the Penn Activity Center.
