Oskaloosa--As part of the NAIA's Champions of Character initiative, several members of the William Penn women's soccer team volunteered their time by ringing bells for the Salvation Army in December.

Team members rang bells from 3:30-6:30 p.m. on December 1 in front of the Oskaloosa Wal-Mart store. The squad raised a total of $196.16 in donations.

All of the money raised from the campaign will remain in Mahaska County to those who have suffered tragedies, as well as children and families in need.

"Ringing the bells for Salvation Army is something each of my players looks forward to doing each year," Lady Statesmen Head Coach Greg Walter said. "This is a great way for us to give back to the local community. Many of the people who the Salvation Army supports are huge soccer fans."

Players also donated their time and skills in December in the construction of the Mahaska Community Recreation Foundation float for the Oskaloosa Lighted Christmas Parade. It is the second year the team has helped with the float's construction.
