Every team's goal is to advance to the postseason and, already in their first seasons, both the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen are very close to making that dream a reality.
A team must rank in the top 48 to qualify for the USBC's sectional tournaments and the Penn women are currently 42nd. Pikeville (Ky.) is first in the ranking provided by collegebowling.com, while Wichita State (Kan.) is second.
The men have some room for improvement, ranking 61st in the nation, while Wichita State is first and Lindenwood (Mo.) is second.
Samantha Powell (Fr., Herriman, Utah, Bingham HS) tops the Penn women with a 171.8 average in 48 games, including a high game of 214.
Jordan Duver (Fr., Indianola, Indianola HS) and
Breanne Underwood (Jr., Treynor, Treynor HS) are tied for the school's single-game record of 226.
Sean Rangel (Fr., Omaha, Neb., Omaha West HS) paces the Statesmen varsity with a 191.6 average over 49 games. He has a season-high game of 252, while
Brandon Brooks (Jr., Sigourney, Vincennes) leads the team with a school-record game of 260.
Rangel posted the school's best individual tournament performance back in November by winning the Minnesota Invitational with a 217.5 average in six games.
"Our first year has gone about as I expected," Penn Head Coach
Ammon Bennett said. "We have shown at times that we can compete with anyone, but at times we have shown inconsistency that is prevalent among young teams."
"I expect us to continue to improve and with a strong group returning and good recruits coming in, we should cut our ranking in half," Bennett added. "I believe that having both of our programs ranked in the top 25 is very attainable."
Penn returns to action on January 16-17 when it travels to West Chicago, Ill. for the Eagles NAIA Baker Challenge.
