Christa Subbert posted her second double-double of the campaign with 22 points and 11 rebounds
Oskaloosa--The duo of Christa Subbert (Jr., Stanton, Stanton HS) and Samantha Darley (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa CC) paced the Penn women's basketball team to a 79-55 victory against Ashford in Midwest Collegiate Conference action Wednesday.

The Lady Statesmen (10-8, 2-2 MCC), who have already matched last season's win total (10-22 last year), were unstoppable early with the game's first 19 points.

Unfortunately, the Saints (8-8, 1-3 MCC) decided to join the party and reeled off the next seven points. Despite holding a 51.7%-29.0% edge in first-half shooting, Penn only led 41-29 by halftime.

The hosts regrouped in the locker room and, paced by another solid defensive effort (holding Ashford to 26.7% from the field), took care of business to even up their league record. The Lady Statesmen eventually won the shooting battle 45.2%-27.9%.

Subbert led all players with her second double-double of the year, recording 22 points and 11 rebounds. The junior made four three-pointers and was 6-6 at the free-throw line.

Darley finished with 20 points on 9-20 shooting, while Nancy Chicas (Sr., San Francisco, Calif., San Mateo CC) reached double figures as well with ten points. Nine others also contributed in the scoring column, but none with more than five points.

Penn outrebounded Ashford just 47-41, but turned that into a massive 20-6 edge in second-chance points. The teams broke even with 20 turnovers each, but again the Lady Statesmen were more opportunistic with a 29-20 advantage in points off turnovers. Penn also had more blocks (4-0) and steals (11-4) than its foe.

Darley joined Rachel Butler (Jr., Anaheim, Calif., Cerritos CC) and Chandra Melaragno (Sr., Hartville, Ohio, Marlington HS) with a team-high three assists and was also one of five Lady Statesmen with two steals.

Next: Penn is off until next Wednesday when it hosts St. Ambrose in MCC action at 7:30 p.m.
