The Penn women's basketball team scored the final nine points of regulation and dominated overtime to drop Mount Mercy 66-59 in Midwest Collegiate Conference play Saturday.
Paced by 14 first-half points from leading scorer
Christa Subbert (Jr., Stanton, Stanton HS), Penn (11-9, 3-3 MCC) pulled out to a 27-21 advantage at the break.
The roles severely reversed out of the locker room, however, as the Mustangs (12-8, 4-2 MCC) went on a 27-9 run to go ahead by a dozen at 48-36 midway through the second stanza.
The teams exchanged two points each in the following three minutes and the Lady Statesmen remained behind by 12 with 7:15 left in regulation.
The visitors then slowly began their comeback, scoring five straight points, but Mount Mercy answered with four of the next six points to still maintain a nine-point edge at the 4:24 mark.
Carleigh Hobson (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Antelope Valley CC) then started one of the best comebacks in recent Lady Statesmen history as she recorded a three-point play on the next possession.
After a defensive stop,
Janice Adams (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Austin HS) scored another basket to cut the margin to four points with 3:36 remaining.
There was just one more made field goal by either team, and after
Raven House (So., New Orleans, La., Cabrini HS) connected on a pair of free throws with 1:49 left, Subbert tied the game at 54-54 on a layup at the 1:06 mark. The junior finished with a game-high 20 points.
Neither team was able to do anything offensively in the final minute, including turning the ball over once each, and overtime commenced.
With momentum now in their hands, the Lady Statesmen scored first and never trailed in the extra session. The Mustangs did tie the game at 57-57 with 2:20 left, but
Samantha Darley (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa HS) knocked down consecutive three-pointers and Penn rolled to the win.
The Lady Statesmen hit 39.7% of their shots, while holding Mount Mercy to 36.5% from the field. Penn also won the battle of boards with a 48-38 rebounding edge and made 16-22 free throws, compared to just 7-18 for the Mustangs.
The visiting bench was strong as well, and led by ten points via Adams, the Lady Statesmen's non-starters outscored the Mount Mercy bench 26-4. Adams finished with a double-double as she pulled down a team-best ten rebounds as well.
Darley, Hobson, and
Nancy Chicas (Sr., San Francisco, Calif., San Mateo CC) all finished with eight points apiece, while House contributed six points in the win. Chicas dished out a game-high five assists and led Penn with three steals.
Penn won despite committing 24 turnovers (21 for MMC).
"We did not play our best game today, but we played great in the last ten minutes to win," Lady Statesmen Head Coach
Brian Spielbauer said. "
Christa Subbert had another great game to lead us. Our defense cranked up the pressure in the end. This is a good win on the road."
