Pella--The Statesmen wrestling team may be able to look to this Saturday as the day the season turned around as Penn competed very well at the Central Open.

125-pounder Matt Chustz (Sr., Manassas Park, Va., Manassas Park HS) and 141-pounder Dustin Howa (Sr., Price, Utah, Carbon HS) each won their respective weight classes to pace the Statesmen. Chris Diaz (So., Montrose, Colo., Olathe HS) also reached national-qualifying standards by placing fourth at 165 pounds.

Chustz went 4-0, including a fall and a major decision. The senior pulled off a huge 4-2 win over Zach Meury of Missouri Baptist in the championship match for the tournament gold. Meury is ranked #6 in the latest NAIA rankings.

Howa was also 4-0 with a fall and defeated Missouri Baptist's Jacob Thorton 8-4 for the crown.

Diaz lost his first match to the eventual tournament champion, but then reeled off four straight wins, including two by fall and one by technical fall to reach the third-place match.

Ryan Groom (So., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) led a group of non-placers with a solid day himself. The sophomore was 3-2 at heavyweight (two falls), while Jesse Buchanan (Fr., Gilman, East Marshall HS) was 2-2 at 184 pounds and Alfredo Velasquez (Fr., Fontana, Calif., AB Miller HS) finished 1-2 at 149 pounds (one fall).

Next: Penn travels to Sioux City Friday for a dual meet against #18 Morningside at 6 p.m.
