In a game postponed 24 hours because of icy road conditions, Penn (12-9, 4-3 MCC) outscored the Warriors 32-12 in the final nine-plus minutes of action. The win moves the program above the .500 mark in the league for the first time this year. It is also the first time Penn has been above .500 in MCC play since December 4, 2007, starting the conference slate at 1-0.
The Lady Statesmen trailed 64-47 with 9:11 left in regulation, but then started their run with ten unanswered over the next 3:09 to cut the deficit to just seven points.
Penn, who had rallied from nine points down against Mount Mercy last Saturday, watched as the advantage extended back to ten points.
The visitors still trailed by seven points with 3:50 left until they scored on four consecutive possessions to take the lead back for the first time since leading 33-32 with 43 ticks left in the first half.
Waldorf (6-13, 2-5 MCC) answered back with a jumper by Rachel Hannam, who finished with 20 points, to regain the edge at 74-73 with 1:48 remaining.
The waning seconds were dominated by the Lady Statesmen, however, as they iced the game at the free-throw line. Penn finished 15-18 overall at the stripe, including making all six of their final attempts, while Hannam had the only answer with one field goal.
The Warriors did have a final chance to tie the game, but a desperation three-pointer by Samantha Boje did not find the bottom of the cylinder.
Christa Subbert (Jr., Stanton, Stanton HS) led all players with 22 points, including 14 in the second half. The junior made four of the final six charity stripe shots, while
Carleigh Hobson (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Antelope Valley CC) hit the other two en route to another solid performance of 12 points off the bench (ten in the second period).
Rachel Butler (Jr., Anaheim, Calif., Cerritos CC) also reached double figures with 13 points. Butler, with eight rebounds, and Subbert, with nine caroms, both just missed double-doubles as Penn won the battle of the glass 43-39.
The Lady Statesmen had a productive shooting performance, going 48.3% from the field, while holding Waldorf to 40.5%. That advantage was crucial as Penn struggled to maintain possession throughout the evening, giving the ball up 21 times, compared to 14 mishaps for the home team.
Samantha Darley (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa HS) tallied nine points and a team-high three assists in the win, while
Nancy Chicas (Sr., San Francisco, Calif., San Mateo CC) had seven points and
Ashton Perez (Jr., Wildomar, Calif., Riverside CC) finished with six.
Despite being one of the shorter players on the floor, Chicas recorded three blocked shots, helping her squad to an impressive 7-0 edge in that category.
Next: Penn has little time for rest as it hosts Viterbo in MCC action Saturday at 1 p.m.
