Des Moines--The Penn women's basketball team could not replicate a solid first period in dropping a 71-58 decision to Grand View in Midwest Collegiate Conference action Thursday.

The Lady Statesmen (13-11, 5-5 MCC), who fall back to even .500 in the conference, gave it all they had in the first 20 minutes, holding a 30-28 lead at the break. Despite losing the first half shooting battle 47.8%-33.3%, Penn actually held a seven-point advantage at 25-18 with 6:44 remaining until intermission.

The visitors pushed the margin up to three in the early going of the second stanza, but Grand View (18-6, 8-2 MCC) reeled off ten of the next 11 points to take the lead back, a lead it would never again relinquish.

Penn did manage, however, to narrow the deficit to 41-40 with 9:03 left, but the drama ended there. The Vikings, who stayed within one game of league-leading Iowa Wesleyan (9-1 MCC), scored on three straight possessions to pull away for good.

Christa Subbert (Jr., Stanton, Stanton HS) connected on seven of her 15 field-goal attempts for a team-best 16 points, while Samantha Darley (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa HS) surpassed double digits with 11 points, highlighted by a trio of three-pointers.

Nancy Chicas (Sr., San Francisco, Calif., San Mateo CC) and Carleigh Hobson (Jr., Lancaster, Calif. Antelope Valley CC) both posted eight-point performances, while Chicas tallied a game-high eight assists.

Ashton Perez (Jr., Wildomar, Calif., Riverside CC) pulled down eight rebounds to lead all players as Penn won the rebounding category 32-28 (16-6 offensive). That led to a 14-7 edge in second-chance points for the visitors.

One could say the game was decided at the charity stripe as Penn had just 11 attempts, knocking down eight, while the Vikings were 27-35 overall. The Lady Statesmen were called for 24 turnovers, compared to 11 for the hosts.

Penn committed less turnovers (19-21) and had more steals (11-7) than its opponent. Darley tied for the game high with three thefts.
