The Lady Statesmen (14-11, 6-5 MCC) held the visitors to 21.1% shooting and forced 25 turnovers. The effort was necessary, however, because Penn struggled a bit itself, shooting 34.5% with 23 mistakes. Clarke (6-19, 3-8 MCC) was just 1-11 from three-point land, while Penn was much better, finishing 6-17.
The 31 points allowed by Penn is the second-lowest total this year (16 by Faith Baptist Bible in November) and is the lowest mark in league play since Penn joined the MCC in 2001-2002.
Good offensive possessions were at a premium on Saturday as the teams combined for just 18 points (11-7 Penn lead) midway through the first period. Penn eventually led 23-16 at intermission.
The hosts pushed the advantage to double figures soon after the break and the game was never close again.
Christa Subbert (Jr., Stanton, Stanton HS) poured in 18 points to top all players. She was the lone Lady Statesmen player to get over the mark with
Samantha Darley (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa HS) next at eight points on the afternoon.
Chandra Melaragno (Sr., Hartville, Ohio, Marlington HS) was perfect from the field (3-3) to manage seven points, while
Rachel Butler (Jr., Anaheim, Calif., Cerritos CC) added six points.
Ashton Perez (Jr., Wildomar, Calif., Riverside CC) tallied five points in the win, but was most effective on the glass with a team-high nine rebounds. Penn won the battle of the boards 47-39, leading to a 12-4 edge in second-chance points.
Nancy Chicas (Sr., San Francisco, Calif., San Mateo CC) posted three assists to lead all participants and also matched Darley with two steals.
Penn owned a 21-11 advantage in points off turnovers.
